Tips to be more Productive while Working at Home
Working while at home is the dream for a lot of people. It takes away the need for commute, you don’t have a boss (kinda) and you control your time. However, one of the issues with this is that it is kind of hard to be productive when you are only accountable to yourself. If there’s no one to keep you in check every now and then, you might get into a habit of spending more time distracting yourself rather than doing your job. And worse, you will convince yourself that you will work double time to make up for lost time but you know you won’t.
Here are some tips on how to be productive when working at home. I’ve been working at home for nearly 8 years now and there were times when I didn’t do as much as I could and I regret the time I wasted. Nothing can be done about that and instead of regretting the past, I look forward and make sure that I do what I can as soon as possible in order to achieve more.
- Establising a routine and sticking with it
Setting a schedule for work and non-work hours is very important in order to get work done and minimize distractions. WIthout a routine, you will often find yourself not doing anything and since you are not under company time, there really is no consequence, well, aside from not getting work done. This is very unproductive and you want to minimize or eliminate this. A routine will help a lot in keeping you busy.
- Dedicate a room and setup an office
A room dedicated for work is the same principle as establishing a routine, which is to minimize distractions and focus on work. Everything in the office should be about your job. A room with a closed door is a good idea as you won’t be disturbed and you won’t disturb other people in your house.
- Keep everything organized
keeping your desk clean and everything organized will save you a lot of time and frustration. A filing system where you know where everywhere is will keep you sane. Your computer should not contain any files that can distract you from doing your job. Setting a profile in your laptop or desktop computer that is only for work can also help with productivity.
- Take breaks and off days are important
Taking regular breaks just like if you were in the office will do wonders in keeping your energy up. Just do it in moderation and don’t let it get to a point where you are taking too many breaks. Days off are also important in order to recharge your body and your brain. Too much work without any breaks won’t be good for you, mentally and physically.
- Set mini goals and long term goals
Short term and long term goals will allow you to work more efficiently, especially if you are achieving them. For short term goals, make it simple and a bit easy to accomplish. Seeing results, even tiny ones, will always motivate you.
Working at home is very enjoyable because of all the benefits that you will have. However, it is not always easy and one of the things that we need to overcome is the constant presence of distractions. With these tips, hopefully, you can rid of these distractions and focus on what’s important; working and achieving financial success.
