Life lived abunduntly through nature, health and God

It came to me today as I examined my dreads, why I love/hate them.

There is a part of me that enjoys ‘put together’.  I find joy in symmetry and perfect lines.  A friend with perfect glossy bouncy curls is lovely to look at.  A home straight out of a catalog can be something to envy…. but not to live in.  I don’t want to live in a magazine.  I don’t want to look like a photo-shopped ad.

Bleached white teeth and tanning booth tans.  Brand new cars driven off the lots, children neat and tidy.  Hairs all in a line and shoes with out a blemish.  All these things tell me something….. there is something hidden.  Somewhere under all that ‘perfect’ is a person with a naked soul wanting to be known.

Twisted branches, tangled hair.  Dirt smudged children and warm messy kitchens.  Socks with holes and clothes smelling of ‘home’.  These things make me feel safe.  People that embrace little messes (and sometimes big ones) are saying ‘here I am, welcome to ME’. I don’t begrudge another for having something seemingly perfect, I just enjoy homemade/natural/broken/messy/ghetto- rigged a little bit more.

People that are ‘messy’ and people that are ‘tidy’ all have something in common.  We all have the same desires.  At the very core of it is the same heart.

So I wear my dreads as an acceptance of my ‘mess’.  My imperfection.  Here I am, welcome to ‘ME’.

A year of dreads.  A year of always having fuzzy caterpillars stuck to my head.  A year of smiles and nods of appreciation, or odd stares and averting eyes.

In the pursuit of my identity, who I am, being what I stand for… I realized I need an outward expression of the heart change I was having on the inside.

I was tired of feeling like my identity was heavily attached to my appearance.  I know that seems odd, since doing something so blatant like getting dreads would seem to say ‘I find my identity in my appearance’…. but that hasn’t been my experience.  I have had to work extra hard to convince people that my heart is where my treasure is.  My greatest fear is often acceptance by others.  Specifically those older, wiser or more wealthy than I.  Often times before going somewhere I would dress accordingly.  Going to the gym?  All matching addidas gear and clean shaving pits and legs.  Going to a classy restaurant?  Darker make-up with heels and a pea coat that matches my purse.   If I was going to a folk music concert, it was loose braids and torn jeans.

Now, I can change my clothes, buy new accessories but my hair is still the way it is.  I cant hide the fact that I have matted up hair.

In this year I’ve stopped wearing make up, mostly.  At least for my every day errands and outings.  Because under the make up I feel adequate enough.  I stopped shaving…. yep..  Hairy arm pits and legs.  Because it’s not a priority to me.  I have found beauty in my natural state.  I have found that the person I was originally created to be, the shell that I live in, is enough for me right now.  Perhaps I’ll go back to shaving and having ‘normal’ hair again…. there’s nothing binding me to this.

I love finding clothes that are functional, comfortable and add color to my day.  I love my jade stone earrings, I’ve even added bits of colorful recycled silk yarn to my dreads… to add to who I am.  Not to make me who I am.

picture-0201

It’s been a journey of the heart.  Not a rebellion towards society.  It’s been a process of being able to meet someones eyes and smile deeply at them even though I can tell they’re put off by my appearance.

It’s about knowing that my identity lies in my savior, Jesus.  Meaning I AM, because I am loved.  When you know you are loved unconditionally, you dont feel like you have to work sooo hard to convince people to accept who you think you are.

I look forward to what my dreads will teach me in the coming years.  Enjoy the unique-ness of others.  Learn to find a persons heart.  You may find under the expensive jewelry and well groomed hair that there is bitterness and spite.  Or perhaps you will find that they are genuine and compassionate.  Don’t let your first impression be your only impression.

Happy Dreadiversary.

Hello dears.  The end of summer is on fast forward here.  The mornings and evenings are chilled and it will only be a matter of days before we’ll be filling our wood stove with our newly cut wood.  Which is in part to blame for my absence.  I’ve been blanching chard, making and freezing soups, canning blackberry jam, chopping and storing wood, making elderberry syrup in anticipation of fall sicknesses, grinding flour for the baking that will fill the house with good smells this fall and trying to finish up my summer knitting project.

I recently made a batch of spring back healing cream that turned out to be my best one yet.  I added extra helichyrsum, geranium, patchouli, lavender, bergamot, and frankincense to the thick creamy mixture of shea, kokoum, illipee, coconut, jojoba and rosehip oils to make the most delicious lotion.  I cant stay out of it.  I smooth my face with it several times a day, my elbows feel like baby skin and my shoulders are just in heaven.  I made alot of it.  More than I usually make.  It’s just sitting there waiting for someone to enjoy.  Would you like to enjoy some?  You can if you’d like, I’d be happy to send it to you.  I will tell you know that the ingredients are of higher quality and fresher than anything you’ll find in your local store.  This is like eating a carrot straight from the ground as opposed to getting the baby carrots on a veggie tray from walmart.  This stuff is still alive and it meshes with your skin like the ingredients are long lost cousins to your tired facial cells.  They’re invited right in and instantly make your skin happier and more vibrant.

The essential oils that I add to this are worth several hundreds dollars per 5 ml bottle, and I’ve added a generous amount to this particular batch.  You’ll be able to tell the second you open the jar and the scent hits your nose.  I have 2 jars that are 2 oz size, they are $15 a piece.  I also have 2 jars in 4oz size for $22.  Add $3 for shipping to each order.  Leave me a comment and I’ll email you the address in which to send a check and I’ll get your Spring Back cream in the mail so you can enjoy it too.

Cheers to Fall.  My favorite season and the time in which I feel the most alive, vibrant and creative!  I’m sure I’ll be more diligent in posting.  :)

I have been asked on occasion how and what products I use for my skin/face/hair/makeup….etc.  I figured a post about it would be nice to have in order to explain what I do and why I do it!

I know this is going to end up looking like a giant ad for my etsy products… but I created them because I couldn’t find stuff like this anywhere!  And I’m not lying.  I. could. NOT. find stuff that I liked, that worked or was even close to being affordable.  Thus the birth of neohippiemama skincare.

Raw Honey Turbinado Scrub

First let me premise this all by saying, your very first line of skincare starts in the kitchen.  Drink filtered water.  Eat organic fruits and veggies.  Use coconut and grapeseed oils.  Cut soy out of your diet.  Eat pasture fed meats.  Whole grains.  Choose local sources for dairy and eggs.  Don’t pump your body full of diet pills, medications (question your dr.’s advice… do research before taking ANYTHING) and ‘meal replacements’.  Cut back on the coffee, sugar and alcohol.  When you do consume those things chose natural and organic.

So. We’ll start with the top and work on down.

Hair:

Here’s a recent picture of what my hair looks like currently

dscn3446

Sorry for the crazy lady smile.  My hair is more voluminous than it has ever been.   It gets easily entangled in a certain someones grubby little baby hands, but I like it just fine.  I use Henna to give it a bit of a copper/red glow.  Henna is just a plant.  Plain and simple.  It comes in a powder form, I add boiling water and maybe some yogurt and honey or an egg yolk to give it extra shine.  It comes in the normal shades, like black, auburn, red, blonde and a neutral shade which is simple to strengthen and give your hair natural shine.  It wont lighten your hair and it has absolutely no toxins or unnatural substances in it.  If you want to lighten your hair a bit, add a squeeze of lemon juice to it.

Shampoo and conditioner.  I haven’t bought a bottle of either in 2.5 years.  I use baking soda diluted in water to scrub my scalp and apple cider vinegar diluted, to give it shine.  I use my Tress serum to condition and tame it.  I never came across a shampoo or conditioner that was cost effective, and void of parabens, sulfates or fragrances that I like.  Besides the fact that I am saving at least $20 a month.  Actually more, because I don’t buy hair sprays,  mousse, gels, or shine enhancers, and I haven’t been to a salon in 3 years.  I wonder how much I HAVEN’T spent on my hair?!

Thats it.

I am planning on dreading my hair soon….. stay tuned for that.

Facial care and makeup

Let me preface this by saying…. up until literally a few months ago I have ALWAYS had problems with certain areas on my face.  Right around my chin and mouth and around my nose are always dry, broken out and red.  I have tried everything from Clinique and  Estee Lauder to completely natural products like Mychelle and Dr. Haushkas.  It’s crazy how stubborn my skin has been.  Part of it is diet, part of it is hormonal inbalances and the other 1/2 is skin care.  Right now I use my Healing Face wash which has healing Organic Jojoba Oil and a few different organic therapeutic grade essential oils coupled with pure Castille soap.  My skin is clear people.  AND it doesn’t burn when I wash my face!!!  You have no idea how great this is…  I moisturize with either my Healing Calendula and Lavender cream or my Face tonic.  Switching between the two has given me the best results.  OH my face is soft and little wrinkles seem to have been stopped in their tracks.  It’s seriously true love.

For makeup I use Everyday minerals.  They’re the best natural make up I’ve found that’s also in my budget.   Hold on to your seats, cause I’m about to tell you how much I spend on makeup EACH year.  Yes, I said year.  $50.  That includes 2-3 powder foundations (That last F.O.R.E.V.E.R) blushes and bronzer,  eye colors and eyebrow color.  Check it out, follow this link for a FREE KIT, add one of the kits to your order.  I’ve been using this company’s makeup for 4 years now and I will remain loyal as long as they continue to use great ingredients and keep their prices so reasonable.  As for mascara and lip stuff, I recently indulged and purchased a Dr. Hauschkas Aubergine Mascara, but when I got home, I was disappointed in it’s toxicity rating by this website, Cosmetic Database, especially since I dropped $30 on it.  I will be researching BEFORE purchasing next time!  As for lipcolor, I don’t really use color.  I just keep my lips ridiculously soft and kissable (seriously, I cant keep my hubster away from them) with my LipLove.  I have gotten rave reviews back from my purchasers on this product.  I’m not surprised really.  I used natural beeswax and local raw honey, jojoba and avocado oils, to name a few of the yummy ingredients.

Moving on.  Body.

Wash:

I make my own soap….. which isn’t for sale yet.  I’m working on perfecting it.  I can’t quite get consistent results yet.  But you’re safe if you purchase natural Lye soap.  Try a goats milk and oatmeal bar.  You can find one at Etsy or a local health food store.  We also use Dr. Bronners for everything.  Body wash, dishes, laundry, washing the floor….

dr-bronners1

It’s great stuff.  Pure Castille soap.

I also use my Healing Calendula and Lavender Cream for all over body moisturizing, but mostly on my stretch marks and hands (As well as my face)  I just finished perfecting my all over body lotion, which sold out in the first day, so I’m working on another batch which will be available next week.

Deodorant:

Man, the ingredients in commercially sold Deo is soooo bad for you!  Especially if you’re nursing… all those toxins shoved right in your little ones face… yikes.  I have tried EVERY natural crystal, deodorant, spray… whatever.  Nothing works.  That I’ve found.  But don’t lose hope!  There is an answer!  I mix up equal parts pure organic coconut oil and baking soda with therapeutic grade lavender and tea tree essential oils and guess what….. IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I’m not even kidding you.  It’s crazy!  I’m working on the recipe to sell on my site (it will most likely have some sort of emollient in it to help it bond so it can be put in a stick and spread on…. I use my hands right now)

Dental Care: First of all, flouride should not be in your dental hygiene routine.  Am I just rockin your world right now?!  Do some research, here’s a good place to start.  I use Young Livings Dentarome Toothpaste.  Want some?  I’ll add it to my order, or I’ll show you how to order it at wholesale price.

Here’s a little secret.  I haven’t been to the dentist in 7 years.  Here’s another secret that will blow your mind.  I have a cavity that has been bothering me for the last year and I’ve been ignoring it…. (I know that’s bad)  Since I’ve been drinking Raw Organic milk and using young livings toothpaste… it’s going away.

Yes.  you read that right.

It’s diminishing AND it doesn’t hurt.  Did you know that cavities can HEAL?!  You don’t have to just get them filled!!! Holy crap.  It’s a miracle!  Read more about dental health on the westonaprice.org. site.

The Hubster uses Young Livings Mouthwash because he smokes a tobacco pipe and I cant STAND kissing him after he smokes…. Or really if he smokes then takes a shower, brushes his teeth, or uses ‘other’ mouthwashes.  This mouthwash, however does the trick.  He used to test my nose by saying he hadn’t smoked that day… but I could tell.  Now I cant.  I keep it stocked well for the sake of our marriage.  :)

Fragrances:

I use my Therapeutic Grade Essential oils for fragrance.  It’s healing, natural and not toxic.  Miessence has apparently come out with a non toxic fragrance line that looks like something I’d like to try!

Did I cover everything?  If you have other questions, let me know and check out your cosmetics at CosmeticDatabase.com It’s amazing and incredibly disturbing what lurks in your cosmetics, skin care and dental care!

A few years back when I stopped using commercial products, shampoos, detergents and processed cosmetics, I noticed something.  My house smelled like…. people lived in it.  At times it sort of smells like the dinner I cooked last night.  Or we would all be highly aware that the garbage should be taken out.  Now I diffuse essential oils into the air so there’s a  rich healing aroma in each room.  What I DIDN’T smell was air fresheners, scented soaps and lotions, shampoos and hairsprays, or the fake lemon scent of dishsoap or fake ‘jasmine’ in the clothes detergent.

I started wondering what makes all those things smell.  I stopped using them and switched to natural alternatives because of the ingredients, but what I didn’t consider is which of those ingredients are supposed to make them ‘pleasing’ to the nostrils.  And to be honest, now that our house is rid of those products, they all give me headaches or make my nose burn when I’m around them!

One of the main products I was curious about it Perfume.  What IS perfume?  Is it crushed up flowers and sunshine?  Uhhh…  NO.  Did you know there’s no regulation for what goes into perfumes and colognes?!  How is that even permissible!  UGH!  It’s so infuriating.

I’m not trying to be paranoid and I wont start wearing masks when I leave the house, but since I spend the majority of my day in my house, I’ve decided that we wont be using products containing these harmful chemicals.

To speculate a bit, I wonder how many of these products contribute to depression?  Allergies? Anxiety? Headaches?  And maybe even Cancer or chronic illnesses?!!

As an alternative I suggest essential oils.  I started wearing an essential oil blend containing ylang ylang, bergamot, jasmine, rosewood, and geranium, to work a few years back.  Without fail, every day I wore it I would have someone comment on how pleasant I smelled.  They would say they felt peaceful around me or that they felt like I had a happy ‘Aura’.  I wish I could say it was just me, but those sorts of comments were scarce on days I went without my essential oils. :)   The blend I wore was appropriately named, Joy, through Young Living Oils.

joy

A word of caution!  Not all essential oils are equal!  If you have a bottle of Lavender from your local grocery store I would be willing to bet more money than I have, that it’s not ‘true’ lavender.  In most cases it’s lavandin, which has a similar smell to lavender, but it is actually irritating to the skin and can cause allergic reactions.  True lavender has incredible calming powers as well as being antimicrobial and healing.  Lavender is SOOO much more than just a pleasant smell!  Actually, the other day I was treating my littlest sons diaper rash and I grabbed the burts bees lavender diaper cream that I’ve been using.  Before putting it on him, I glanced at the ingredients only to be dissapointed in reading that it contained Lavandin rather than true lavender.  So instead I mixed a few drops of Therapeutic Grade Lavender and jojoba oil and coated his little bum with the mixture and within minutes the redness was gone and he was his happy cheery self.

So if you’re considering switching from Victoria Secrets new body mist to a healthier alternative, let me suggest a few options.

Those are just a FEW of the oils you could wear, or use in your laundry, fragrance free soap, body wash, shampoo…etc.  Of course ALL of these oils have more uses than just personal aroma.  They are all excellent for emotional, physical and mental purposes.  It takes a bit to get used to wearing an essential oil versus a cologne or perfume.  It wont be as abrupt and overpowering.  I can assure you though, that people will want to know what you’re wearing.  They may even be more relaxed or pleasant in your presence!

My favorites are

Sandalwood, Joy, Abundance, DragonTime (LOVE this one) and Lavender

I enjoy mixing different ones to help create a certain mood, or to help alleviate depression, sadness, anxiety or frustration!

So please consider checking out the ingredients in your non-eatable products too!  Especially if you have young ones in the house.  Babies especially are VERY sensitive to products with harmful ingredients and additives.  It makes my heart a little sad thinking that perhaps the reason a child is crying or distraught isn’t simply because they are tired or cutting a new tooth, but perhaps all the chemicals in the air are disturbing to them.

This post is not to shame or berate anyone personally.  I merely would like to raise more awareness towards peoples purchases and use of commercial goods!  Be informed and be in control!!
